If you’re trying to rank highly for keywords he first and most important part of the process is the keyword research.  If you are a website design company and you want to rank for the keyword “websites”, that is probably an unrealistic expectation as you will have to compete with 236,000,000 other websites for the first page. On the other hand the keyword “Best Website Design Company in Colorado with free consultations” does not even get a measurable amount of daily hits. This means that it might be easier to rank for, but what’s the point if it won’t result in a solid ROI?  To see how many keywords get what hits use the Google Keyword Tool on their website. Spend a good amount of time researching the terms you want to hit.

Complete On-Site Optimization

Although there are millions of people around the world that claim they do SEO, many only do on-site optimization.  On-site optimization includes adding your keyword in your URL structure, proper siloing, uploading sitemaps, editing title tags, descriptions, headings, and more. By optimizing your page for one particular keyword you will be heading the right direction. Generate the best content that the user could want. Create unique content that provides the best user experience. The issue is that this is only 30% of the ranking factors.

Start Getting Some Links

Having good quality links coming back to your website is key to any successful SEO campaign.  Don’t buy links but rather get them by guest blogging, getting links from charities you sponsor, and by creating listing profiles on websites such as Yelp, YellowBot, and Citysearch.  When filling out these profiles they will allow for you to enter your website.
